What is a buyer persona?

A buyer persona is the portrait of the specific person who decides or influences the purchase of your product, with their role, goals and decision criteria. It complements the ideal customer profile, which describes the target company, by putting a face on who you need to convince inside it.

What is the difference between a buyer persona and an ICP?

They operate at different levels of the same process. The ideal customer profile describes the company you want as a customer, with measurable criteria such as industry, size or country. The buyer persona goes one level down and describes the person inside that company who decides or influences the purchase, with their role, goals, fears and the way they evaluate vendors.

They work in order. First the ICP filters which accounts deserve commercial effort, then the persona indicates who to approach inside each account and with what message. Confusing them is costly. Defining only personas without company criteria leads to pleasant conversations with companies that will never buy, and defining only companies leaves the team knocking on doors without knowing who answers.

How do you build a useful buyer persona?

The raw material is real people, not templates. The best sources are interviews with current customers, the sales team’s notes from their conversations and the reasons given both by those who bought and those who did not. From there you extract the essentials, what goals that person pursues, what problem your product solves for them, which objections they repeat and through which channels they prefer to be contacted.

Resist the temptation of the novel. A useful buyer persona fits on half a page and shows up in daily work, changing the subject line of an email or the approach of a booth meeting. At trade shows it becomes especially practical, helping identify the person with the right role among each company’s attendees, the step that naturally follows the account-based prospecting DataOrigin enables event by event.
