# What is a consumer fair?

A consumer fair is an event where companies from different sectors exhibit their products to the general public and the professionals of a region. It is the classic open, multi-sector fair format, aimed both at direct sales and at giving visibility to the local business community.

## How is it different from a trade show?

The consumer fair is the historical and most popular fair format. It brings together companies from varied sectors, from food to furniture or cars, in a venue open to the public of a city or region, and a good share of the exhibitors sell directly at their booth. Its role is as much commercial as social, because it works as a showcase for local business and as the yearly gathering of the area. In Spain and other European countries it is often called a sample fair, after the tradition of showing product samples to the public.

A professional [trade show](https://dataorigin.es/en/glossary/trade-show/) works with a different logic. Entry is restricted to [trade visitors](https://dataorigin.es/en/glossary/trade-visitor/) with a business profile, exhibitors are not there to sell over the counter but to generate contacts and agreements between companies, and the event tends to be [vertical](https://dataorigin.es/en/glossary/vertical-horizontal-trade-shows/), focused on one industry. The same word fair therefore covers two realities with very different audiences and goals.

## Does it make sense for a B2B company?

As a channel to acquire business customers, a consumer fair delivers little. Most visitors are end consumers, buying decision makers are rare among the crowd, and the direct sales context does not favor unhurried business conversations. The budget a booth costs is better spent at the trade show of the corresponding industry, where every aisle concentrates buyers with decision power.

There are reasonable exceptions. A company that sells to shops or local businesses may find its customers among the exhibitors themselves, and a consumer brand can use the fair to test a product and gain awareness in its territory. The key, as always, is to know who will really be at the venue before investing.
